Red Wine Current Releases

The number one goal in blending the Willamette Cuvée is always a balanced wine. For the single vineyard wines the number one goal is trueness to location – we want to represent that vineyard even if it does have a little quirkiness.

With the Willamette Cuvée we have the freedom (or the daunting task) of picking amongst our barrels to find a combination that best suits our tastes for the particular vintage. For 2015 we stayed true to our love of delicate wines with bright acidity, however, the warmth of the 2015 vintage and the more forthright tannins from Lewman and Nuestro Sueño make for a more intense blend compared to 2014. This blend remains –unmistakably- a wine grown, vinted and blended by Akiko Shiba.

This is our third vintage with our Havlin block and our grapes developed much as they always do. Brightness and fresh fruit are present but not overwhelming. Trueness to location while maintaining delicacy and balance between the acidity and phenolics are the goals here. The Pommard brings complexity and character while the 115 & 777 add fruit, body and Pinot noir typicity. Mild acidity and low alcohol give the 2015 Havlin the widest range of food pairing capabilities.

This is our first vintage with Nuestro Sueño Vineyard (NSV), but we have known Tom and his vineyard since moving to Oregon. We have 5 rows at NSV that give us a mixture of 114 and 115 clones. Tom’s vineyard management is detail-oriented and professional and he listens to our input about management and farming. We perform some of the key vineyard-tasks –most importantly picking. This west-facing early-ripening site has an abundance of queen Anne’s lace (wild carrot) growing between rows, which I am convinced provides a positive flavor influence. Wines from NSV are delicate and floral with a whiff of blueberry in the bouquet.

, Eola-Amity Hills AVA

This is also our first vintage with Lewman and we took over management of our blocks at the vineyard starting with pruning. The vines at Lewman are tightly planted and the heads are low to the ground. The vineyard is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA between Bethel Heights and Justice Vineyards and has a LIVE Certification, but in practice the farming is organic. In 2015 we had 115 and 777 blocks (for 2016 we picked up a Pommard block too). The fruit from this vineyard is intense even when picked early. This wine has developed with depth and complexity of flavor while still maintaining its acid – phenol balance. It also has the hint of black pepper that I find on all wines from Lewmann Vineyard.

Barrett Hill Vineyard is in South Salem above the Pettijohn Creek and is within the Willamette Valley AVA. The grapes are 30 year old Pommard clones growing on their own roots in volcanic Nekia soil. The Barrett Hill single-vineyard wine is a blend of four barrels.

Pleasant earthy and mineral tones combine with herbal (eucalyptus), woodsy and floral (roses) notes to make this wine unique. It is, nonetheless, unmistakably Oregon Pinot noir and shows the red and black fruits typical of Oregon, but in this blend they are more the highlight than the headline.

[98 cases, pH 3.59, 17 months in 22% new French Oak, 13.5% ABV, Own-rooted Pommard Clone
, Willamette Valley AVA]

We made two barrels of this classic 115 Clone Pinot Noir -one in new French Oak and the other in neutral French Oak. Half of each barrel went into our 2014 Willamette Cuvee and the other halves went into this single vineyard bottling. The intense dark fruits and spices, dark color and strong body and tannins are balanced by a punchy tartness. Drink now or cellar for a decade.
